Finally, we have the space to discuss the internal pelvic floor muscle exam so that you can make an informed decision without feeling rushed.

The pelvic floor muscles are a hammock like sling from the tailbone to the pubic bone. They are inaccessible to palpate and examine their function externally. As a result, a direct assessment of the pelvic floor muscles' strength, weakness, and function is completed through internal hands-on palpation. Palpation is completed using one or two digits. Exam is completed vaginally and/or rectally based on assessment findings and your consent.

Without a direct assessment, it is an estimate / guess as to what is happening with your tissues and leaves an incomplete picture as to what is happening with your body. The internal exam allows us to know exactly what is happening and how to tailor a treatment plan to reach your goals more efficiently.

Your therapist will always seek consent for each step of the examination. At any time you no longer consent to the internal examination, please notify your therapist and alternatives will be provided.

If after discussions with your therapist, you do not consent to an internal examination, your therapist will work with you to devise a treatment plan based on available information.

You can attend physiotherapy at any time during your pregnancy. Typically, an internal exam is safe during pregnancy as long as you are allowed to have intercourse. If you have any concerns, please discuss with your healthcare provider.
